First date ideas in Edinburgh that beat a drink in the pub

From Arthur's Seat and Calton Hill to Leith, Portobello and the Water of Leith: twelve easy, local first dates.

A couple walking hand in hand on a grassy hilltop with a columned monument and the city skyline behind them

A drink in the pub is fine. But you live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, with hills, galleries and a coastline on the doorstep, and a first date with something to do takes the pressure off: you're side by side, there's always something to talk about, and it's easy to end early if the spark isn't there. Here are twelve ideas from around Edinburgh.

Out in the open

1. Arthur's Seat and Holyrood Park

The old volcano in the middle of the city. Walk to the top for the view, or take the gentler path round by St Margaret's Loch. Free, and a great way to see if you get on.

2. Calton Hill at sunset

A short climb from the east end of Princes Street, with the monuments, the Castle and the Firth of Forth all in view. One of the best free views in Scotland.

3. The Water of Leith to Dean Village

Follow the river path from Stockbridge to Dean Village, with its old mills and stone bridges. Quiet, pretty and full of places to stop for a coffee.

4. Portobello promenade

Edinburgh's own seaside. Walk the prom by the sand, then find somewhere for a hot drink. Easy, relaxed and good in most weathers.

5. Cramond shore

A lovely walk along the shore at the mouth of the River Almond. If you fancy the causeway to Cramond Island, check the tide times first.

Culture and a bit of shelter

6. The National Museum of Scotland

Free, huge and full of surprises, from Dolly the sheep to the rooftop terrace with views over the Old Town.

7. The Scottish National Gallery

On the Mound, between the Old Town and the New. The main collection is free, and talking about what you're looking at is a natural icebreaker.

8. The Royal Botanic Garden

Seventy acres of gardens in Inverleith, and the garden is free to visit. Walk, talk and admire the view of the skyline.

9. The Shore at Leith

The old port, with its quayside, bars and restaurants along the Water of Leith. A lovely spot for an evening stroll.

10. Stockbridge

Independent shops, cafés and a Sunday market. A relaxed place to wander, with plenty of spots to sit down and talk.

Keep it simple

11. Coffee and cake

Meet for a coffee in Bruntsfield, Morningside or Stockbridge. Short, low-key and easy to extend if it's going well.

12. A show

From the Usher Hall to the Festival Theatre and the Fringe in August, there's always something on. Something to talk about on the way home.

A few tips before you go

  • Choose somewhere public for the first meeting, and make your own way there.
  • Let a friend know where you're going and when you expect to be back.
  • Check the weather and opening times before you set off.
  • Keep the first date short. If it goes well, you'll have a reason for a second.
